The Lizard Man of Scape Ore Swamp
85The First Sighting of The Lizard Man of Scape Ore Swamp
George Holliman Jr was thirsty that early fall morning in 1987. It takes a very parched throat to stop and get off your bicycle at just after midnight to take a quenching sip of water from a flowing stream- however clean it may be.. Of course anyone whose ever had an exertion that's caused dehydration long enough might understand, you get relief where you can find it.
After George enjoyed his liquid repast, a cigarette was in order. He'd no sooner started puffing away when something caught his eye from across the road. It appeared to Holliman that a dead tree hit by lightning was standing in an odd place across the way; when suddenly, the tree stood up just like a man would! His mind had no more processed this thing up-righting itself than a car went by causing the 7 or 8 foot entity's eyes to glow red. The creature immediately moved back into the swamp after the car had passed.
According to the sheriff whom George told this to the following August, "He thought it was a hant" or haint. Southern vernacular words sometimes used for haunt, like in, "It's so ugly it could haint a house." This was to be the first sighting of what came to be called "The Lizard Man of Scape Ore Swamp." For many years previous, however, there had been reports of a "Wild Man" or Bigfoot like entity in the area of what was known back in those days as "Scape Whore Swamp," near the small town of Bishopville, S.C.

Christopher Davis has an Encounter
Seventeen year old Christopher Davis was driving home from work in the early morning hours of June 29th, 1988 when without that plop plop warning one will often get, a rear tire blew out on his 1976 Toyota Celica. Chris immediately pulled over on a road next to the Scape Ore Swamp. After replacing the flat with the spare, he began putting the jack and other tire changing tools back into the trunk when he heard an unusual pounding sound come from behind him.
Perhaps its best left to Christopher- who passed a lie detector test the following Sept.- to describe what happened next: "I looked back and saw something running across the field towards me. It was about 25 yards away and I saw red eyes glowing. I ran into the car and as I locked it, the thing grabbed the door handle. I could see him from the neck down- the three big fingers, long black nails and green rough skin. It was strong and angry. I looked in my mirror and saw a blur of green running. I could see his toes and then he jumped on the roof of my car. I thought I heard a grunt and then I could see his fingers through the front windshield, where they curled around on the roof. I sped up and swerved to shake the creature off."
Trembling and frightened, Davis made it home where his parents calmed him down enough so he could tell them what had happened. Chris's father went outside to have a look-see at the Toyota. What he found nearly stunned him. The driver's side mirror had been twisted around violently several times, and deep claw-like scratches were on the roof. Christopher and his family kept this to themselves for a couple of weeks until the sheriff of Lee County requested any information about a bizarre act of apparent vandalism on a Tom and Mary Ware's vehicle.

The Wares Find a Problem
The night of July 14th, 1988 was like any other for the Wares. What they were to find the next morning was anything but. Their car, which had been parked on one of Lee County's numerous back roads, had been attacked- for that is the only word to use- with the hood ornament crushed like an aluminum beer can. The entire electrical works had been ripped out from under the car along with deep claw-like scratches found all over the body of the vehicle.
The police were amazed and a bit bewildered with what they discovered at the scene. The car damage was almost nothing in comparison with what must of been the power and size of what ever assaulted the car, not to mention the deeply impressed tracks; and to be absolutely frank about it, those monstrously eerie looking foot prints the creature had left behind. The sheriff's department made plaster casts of the three-toed tracks- some of which measured 14 inches in length.
The South Carolina Department of Marine sources were adamant in that not only could there be no mistake in the identification, they weren't from any known animal, and that included any possibility of them being a damaged or mutated foot as well. A bit bizarrely, for some unknown reason, later on the S. C. Fish & Wildlife were to contradict the S.C.D.M. by saying they looked phony.

Sightings and Some Evidence
Twelve more people claimed to have seen the Lizard Man during the summer of 1988, with many reporting having a sense of being followed before spotting the creature, while others were actually chased for short distances. Further car attacks were also reported. A major break came on July the 24th when four teenagers out on a double date spotted a massive looking "Thing" dart across the road not 20 feet in front of them. The young men apparently took the girlfriends home and then went straight to the police office reporting on what they'd all seen. Following right behind this were calls about ungodly howls or screeches from the same area, so a Lee County deputy and state trooper took off to investigate. The two officers discovered three 40 gallon cardboard drums smashed and scattered all over the road. Also uncovered were small trees with their tops torn off about eight feet from the ground. In addition three-toed foot-prints measuring 14 inches long by 7 inches wide were followed almost 900 feet into the Scrape Ore Swamp its self. As the summer ended, so did the reports.
Lizard Man Redux?
In 2008, Bob and Dixie Rawson of Bishopville greeted the morning by finding their minivan had been attacked during the night. Heavy damage around the base of the van, including long gashes to the grill and tire wells. In addition to their cats missing, the fresh carcasses of a cow and coyote were found by the Lee County Sheriff in an adjoining field.
The History channels Monster Quest later estimated at least three hundred pounds of torque would have been required to do the damage on the Rawson car fender. The minivan wasn't the only vehicle reported attacked either. Perhaps we haven't heard the last from Lizard Man.

Alastar this was a fascinating Hub.. we don't have anything like this up in my neck of the woods.. well we do have the stroe front preacher.. Chendo the wino.. Sally the Hat.. they call her that because she think she's an object.. hmm maybe if you were to move up here you'd find a story to tell about my peeps..LOL again thanks for the wonderful share...
Hi Alastar,
Wow! This is very scary stuff indeed! But fascinating that so much physical evidence has been left behind - often the evidence, as you know, can be very vague! I might be wrong, but the 'lizard man' sounds a bit like some of the ET's folks have alleged to have seen. But the accounts from the swamp, although showing the creature obviously has some kind of intelligence, seems to be quite adept within his habitat or perhaps that's just coincidence!
I would rather meet a ghost or spirit any time rather than one of these odd creatures that do populate our planet - despite what the know-all/know-nothing scientists might tell us.
I really enjoyed this very scary hub. Voted up + awesome!
AP - I have never heard this story, but my my my what interesting things happen in the Carolinas! Geez...I thought Maryland and Florida were weird places. Lizard man sounds an awful lot like the big foot and werewolf experiences throughout other states in the US. Voted up and interesting, of course. Super entertaining.
Wow, that is crazy. I have never seen anything like that video. That van, wow. I believe I saw a monster quest on the lizard man or some other tv show. They say he has been seen by a lot of people. The world is so big, who is to know. Very good review. You got my vote.
Alastar! I had to look at the post on fb to find the place......My first love from highschool and another childhood friend are both in Charlotte....about 30 South away from the "peachoid?!!! ha ha ...Trying to figure out the Southern "speak!" in the comments...ha ha
Haven't seen either one of them since I was in my early 20's....first love coming to visit me in January....Wow! Will be a trip! Anyway, cool about Greenville....

ALASTAR....Well I will not be camping anytime soon! AND that big beautiful lake near where I live will have to be just a big beautiful lake! ha ha....ALL KIDDING ASIDE......Very cool story.....a fun read and it makes your back get a chill....I sort of live in a very private place where lots of creatures can appear and cause havoc.....WAIT! That must be my neighbors!!!! ha ha ....OK.....I'm in a silly mood, you know how I feel and I enjoyed this!! I will be sleeping with my gun tonight.....Does the "lizard man" speak French and does he really listen? OK.....I can't stop!!!! ha ha G
Oh my, this is too scary, especially now at midnight (down here). Oeeeee, I can feel him right behind me.... Alastar, this is an excellent hub about the Lizard Man, but I've chosen the wrong time to read it. I'm running to my mother now, Nellieanne, to find peace of mind in her poems about love. I'm tip-toeing over all your buttonnnnsssss....
Alastar - I'm beginning to think S.C. is the creepiest state in the nation to live in, lol. (Teasing - sort of.)
But, good grief!! Kevlar and ammo must sell really well there!
See, this is one good reason why I am afraid of swamps and especially driving through them at night! This is scary stuff! I like these type of stories, even though I am a scardy cat! Keep them coming!
Fascinating story. You had me going for a while. I didn't believe it was a man, but I thought it might be a very elaborate hoax or else a surviving remnant from the dinosaurs. I still think there was something real (it may have died by now) in Loch Ness Lake.
This certainly makes a nice read for Halloween . :)
I've never heard of the Lizard Man, he does remind me a little of those Creature from the Black Lagoon movies that were I believe made back in the 1950's.
Lizard man or bogeyman...whatever damaged that car did a good job of it! Wonder how the car insurance folks keyed that into their system? Haha!
Your hubs are so well written and amazing Alaster.
You always have me gripped from beginning to end. I also believe that there is some truth in every legend.
I look forward to reading and learning so much more from you.
I vote up and up here.
Take care
Eiddwen.
Wow, AP, I feel like I need a cigarette after reading this, and you know I don't smoke!
I can see I have a bit of catching up to do, dear friend and this was seasonally "right on time!"
Voted UP & ABI, mar.
We get cars attacked around here, but I get the feeling that it probably is just those little yobs that we see on tv, smashing up the stores! lol
scary!
Very scary story Alastar! I normally don´t believe in any story like this but I find it interesting how the stories start off and sort of get a life of their own as time goes. And the damage to the car is convincing:))
I have a clear memory from when I was a child when everyone in the small community where I lived talked about the "Black Lady". Nobody knew if she was for real or if she was a ghost or maybe a witch, but several people testified that they had seen she had also chased after some. I believed it then and was very scared.
Either way, I like the way you wrote this, both interesting and fascinating!
Tina
So I arrived (dressed in my colonial militia re-enacting outfit)...ready to fight Cornwallis or pirates or what not...and BOOM...ya got me fighting lizards...?? Great Job...kind of creepy... Voted Up and creepy...um...Up and everything...
Very cleverly written! I thought it was taken from a tabloid source.
The easiest thing to do is simply dismiss this kind of occurrence as just vandals or people looking for attention or any number of reasons to take our minds away from the idea that they could be the real deal. You know my take on all of this. The power behind our lives is outside of our conscious awareness in the dark canyons of the subconscious. If our unconscious can project monsters on to people then why not create them as well?
Thank you for another interesting read.
What a fascinating Hub! This is spookier than fiction. (It is a true story, right?)
Hi, Swamp thing, you make my heart sing la la la la! lol sorry it just made me sing it! seriously though, wonder what the hell it is? I expect a lot of the sightings are people dressing up, but not doing the cars like that! interesting stuff, remind me not to go to the swamp! cheers nell
Hi! Tarheel I enjoyed reading this story. I am going to save it for Halloween. Vote up Canook
As They Say,Every Legend Has Some Truth.;)
Great Hub Alaster.;)
Alastar, I was living close to that area in SC when all that stuff was supposedly happening. Brought back memories...now, where did I put that lizard costume?
I love these mystery monster legends. From Mokele Mbembe to the Mothman; From the Boggy Creek Monster to bigfoot, I love 'em all. My favorite is Nessie from Scotland. There's such an appeal to the thought that strange, undiscovered creatures we know nothing about are walking the Earth, hidden just out of sight. That's what makes the idea so much fun.
I hadn't heard of the Lizard Man before, but I'll add him to the list. Thanks for the info.
Rob
Holly Molly!!! If it were me in the middle of the road with this thing coming at me, I would have fumbled and dropped the car keys frozen in fear and become a tasty dinner for Mr. Lizard Man. The “fight or flight” response does not apply to me. It’s more the “freeze” response for me when it comes being scared out of my wit.
Looking at the video, it occurred to me that maybe it attacked the car because the cats ran up underneath it trying to hide.
This is one creepy story. I've heard of some very scary stories of strange encounters and some people just explain it away, but who's to say that there aren't any odd creatures in remote areas that have survived and remained in hiding through the ages.
Thanks for another good scare. Now, I’ll be afraid to drive at night. You know, Florida is not that far from Georgia and we do have swamps here.
Science continually discovers "new" species that had remained hidden for decades, centuries even. There surely are larger ones way back in secluded areas. As humans encroach and destroy their habitat, they come in contact with us more and more. This lizard man may be trying to survive and is forced to come closer to civilization to forage and even seek a mate. What is it? I don't have a clue. Am I a doubter? No. There are some amazing creations on our planet.
This is a well written and interesting piece of work. The fact that Christopher passed a polygraph is great to know. You did well to include that.
Wow....This was so interesting. I had never knew about this before, but I love something about mystery. I do believe that this man was existed. There are many mysterious creatures out there and this world hide them in the secret place. They may appear without any noticed by us. Like this case, there are several witnesses, right. It's enough for us to believe. But research still needed to know more about the existence from this creature. You have done a great job, my friend. Thank for share all pictures and video as well. Vote up up!

I truly believe there are creatures out there beyond our understanding that we just haven't discovered yet. Obviously they are quick and evasive being able to go under the radar from us most of the time, but just enough to make the legends of "eye witness" accounts believable. I believe there are Sasquatch out there, and if they are just another form of living creature we don't know a lot about, perhaps the Lizard Man is yet another mysterious being that we have yet to document. Very entertaining, educating and enjoyable hub! Voted up!
...holy shite what a story - glad it was you telling this story and not me - my lizard man would have been pornographic - lol lol - but all kidding aside I just recommnended you to another hubber which I do all of the time anyway because if there's one writer here that I wish I could write like - it's you!!
You are the quintessential storyteller and historian - and you always leave me satisfied with each new subject as told by you in one of your landmark hubs.

Well Alaster they keep finding lost tribes so I guess it is possible there are species out there that we still know nothing of. I use to laugh at UFO's and definitely believe in them now, as a matter of fact I think I might have caught a picture of one myself. I take sky shots almost daily and two different ones had a UFO it looked like in it. One picture was clearer than the other and there was a smaller one behind it, or it looked like it. So who knows. I think I might fear Lizard Man more than Big Foot. Surely it is something to have so many vehicles tampered with. Fun hub, good to have some fun ones. Awesome.
After reading this fascinating story, Alastar, I believe that Lizard Man is not really looking to make trouble. He just wants to own his very own ride.
