The Lizard Man of Scape Ore Swamp

The First Sighting of The Lizard Man of Scape Ore Swamp

George Holliman Jr was thirsty that early fall morning in 1987. It takes a very parched throat to stop and get off your bicycle at just after midnight to take a quenching sip of water from a flowing stream- however clean it may be.. Of course anyone whose ever had an exertion that's caused dehydration long enough might understand, you get relief where you can find it.

After George enjoyed his liquid repast, a cigarette was in order. He'd no sooner started puffing away when something caught his eye from across the road. It appeared to Holliman that a dead tree hit by lightning was standing in an odd place across the way; when suddenly, the tree stood up just like a man would! His mind had no more processed this thing up-righting itself than a car went by causing the 7 or 8 foot entity's eyes to glow red. The creature immediately moved back into the swamp after the car had passed.

According to the sheriff whom George told this to the following August, "He thought it was a hant" or haint. Southern vernacular words sometimes used for haunt, like in, "It's so ugly it could haint a house." This was to be the first sighting of what came to be called "The Lizard Man of Scape Ore Swamp." For many years previous, however, there had been reports of a "Wild Man" or Bigfoot like entity in the area of what was known back in those days as "Scape Whore Swamp," near the small town of Bishopville, S.C.

Ancient Lizard Man Petroglyph

Christopher Davis has an Encounter

Seventeen year old Christopher Davis was driving home from work in the early morning hours of June 29th, 1988 when without that plop plop warning one will often get, a rear tire blew out on his 1976 Toyota Celica. Chris immediately pulled over on a road next to the Scape Ore Swamp. After replacing the flat with the spare, he began putting the jack and other tire changing tools back into the trunk when he heard an unusual pounding sound come from behind him.

Perhaps its best left to Christopher- who passed a lie detector test the following Sept.- to describe what happened next: "I looked back and saw something running across the field towards me. It was about 25 yards away and I saw red eyes glowing. I ran into the car and as I locked it, the thing grabbed the door handle. I could see him from the neck down- the three big fingers, long black nails and green rough skin. It was strong and angry. I looked in my mirror and saw a blur of green running. I could see his toes and then he jumped on the roof of my car. I thought I heard a grunt and then I could see his fingers through the front windshield, where they curled around on the roof. I sped up and swerved to shake the creature off."

Trembling and frightened, Davis made it home where his parents calmed him down enough so he could tell them what had happened. Chris's father went outside to have a look-see at the Toyota. What he found nearly stunned him. The driver's side mirror had been twisted around violently several times, and deep claw-like scratches were on the roof. Christopher and his family kept this to themselves for a couple of weeks until the sheriff of Lee County requested any information about a bizarre act of apparent vandalism on a Tom and Mary Ware's vehicle.

The Wares Find a Problem

The night of July 14th, 1988 was like any other for the Wares. What they were to find the next morning was anything but. Their car, which had been parked on one of Lee County's numerous back roads, had been attacked- for that is the only word to use- with the hood ornament crushed like an aluminum beer can. The entire electrical works had been ripped out from under the car along with deep claw-like scratches found all over the body of the vehicle.

The police were amazed and a bit bewildered with what they discovered at the scene. The car damage was almost nothing in comparison with what must of been the power and size of what ever assaulted the car, not to mention the deeply impressed tracks; and to be absolutely frank about it, those monstrously eerie looking foot prints the creature had left behind. The sheriff's department made plaster casts of the three-toed tracks- some of which measured 14 inches in length.

The South Carolina Department of Marine sources were adamant in that not only could there be no mistake in the identification, they weren't from any known animal, and that included any possibility of them being a damaged or mutated foot as well. A bit bizarrely, for some unknown reason, later on the S. C. Fish & Wildlife were to contradict the S.C.D.M. by saying they looked phony.

Original Lizard Man Tracks

Sightings and Some Evidence

Twelve more people claimed to have seen the Lizard Man during the summer of 1988, with many reporting having a sense of being followed before spotting the creature, while others were actually chased for short distances. Further car attacks were also reported. A major break came on July the 24th when four teenagers out on a double date spotted a massive looking "Thing" dart across the road not 20 feet in front of them. The young men apparently took the girlfriends home and then went straight to the police office reporting on what they'd all seen. Following right behind this were calls about ungodly howls or screeches from the same area, so a Lee County deputy and state trooper took off to investigate. The two officers discovered three 40 gallon cardboard drums smashed and scattered all over the road. Also uncovered were small trees with their tops torn off about eight feet from the ground. In addition three-toed foot-prints measuring 14 inches long by 7 inches wide were followed almost 900 feet into the Scrape Ore Swamp its self. As the summer ended, so did the reports.

Lizard Man Redux?

In 2008, Bob and Dixie Rawson of Bishopville greeted the morning by finding their minivan had been attacked during the night. Heavy damage around the base of the van, including long gashes to the grill and tire wells. In addition to their cats missing, the fresh carcasses of a cow and coyote were found by the Lee County Sheriff in an adjoining field.

The History channels Monster Quest later estimated at least three hundred pounds of torque would have been required to do the damage on the Rawson car fender. The minivan wasn't the only vehicle reported attacked either. Perhaps we haven't heard the last from Lizard Man.

Some very frightening evidence for this one like you said Seeker. The kind of damage to the vehicle shown in the CCN video is startling. That's no bear or coyote attack. Faithful Daughter may have solved that one by saying the cats got up under the car to try and get away. You make a good comparison there between the Reptoid ETs and Lizard Man. Got a feeling they're not connected but who knows. The evidence in this cryptid enigma is pretty good I'd say. Definitely wouldn't want to be hanging around that swamp after dark. Thank you much for the vote and great comment Seeker7.

Hi Alastar,

Wow! This is very scary stuff indeed! But fascinating that so much physical evidence has been left behind - often the evidence, as you know, can be very vague! I might be wrong, but the 'lizard man' sounds a bit like some of the ET's folks have alleged to have seen. But the accounts from the swamp, although showing the creature obviously has some kind of intelligence, seems to be quite adept within his habitat or perhaps that's just coincidence!

I would rather meet a ghost or spirit any time rather than one of these odd creatures that do populate our planet - despite what the know-all/know-nothing scientists might tell us.

I really enjoyed this very scary hub. Voted up + awesome!

Hi Kitty. You've got the skunk ape down in Fla. At least there were no reports so far as i know about Lizard Man stinking..lol! Yep, all three states are full of weirdness no doubt. Well, all the states really, but since records have been kept in the original 13 longer maybe they have more. A human being was one thing it definitely wasn't. The damage on the cars wasn't done with any kind of tools either. The witness the media largely wrote on passed a lie detector test. Other cars were attacked with similar force and claw marks. At least a dozen folks saw the creature and the authorities took it very seriously just like in the Beast of Bladenboro and other less reported ones since then. Reptilian so maybe it could be what you say Silver Poet; but remember it was bi-pedal and 7 or 8 feet tall. I too, believe it was real. Died in Loch Ness Lake? Well, anythings possible it seems now-a-days. Thank you Silver Poet, lets hope our cars never break down at night near any ole spooky like swamp!

Fascinating story. You had me going for a while. I didn't believe it was a man, but I thought it might be a very elaborate hoax or else a surviving remnant from the dinosaurs. I still think there was something real (it may have died by now) in Loch Ness Lake.

Yes it does. Hubber Angie Ashbourne from Canada read another one to a group of special folk who are challenged but are very brave with their illness's. It went over well and shes going to read this one for Halloween. That makes writing these all the more rewarding personally. Hey, your right. If Vampires, Werewolfs etc can supposedly be real, then why not The Creature From the Black Lagoon too? In my humble opinion they've got a real live one in those S.C. swamps! Thank you Karen, i loved those old horror movies as a kid and still do today.~:).

Good question Peggy. Probably an act of God so they don't have to pay. Yeah, it doesn't take a sharp knife to see in the vid that that was no damage from a coyote or even bear. The Rawson's weren't the only ones in 2008 that had that kind of car attack. When you put these with 1988s,- the kind of onslaught and the strength it would have took along with everything else, well, the belly rolls stop and the weapons are loaded. Thank you Peggy!

Hi Tina! Yes it is scary. Your right, a person should approach these events with a straight head; but some of them are unarguably out of the normal. Exactly what, why and where-from are the questions. Like the man who knew the inside story on the Beast one answered my first query- was it real, absolutely he assured me. Although things can snowball and get exaggerated theres still the core phenomena. "Black Lady" eh. Of course children believe almost anything they're told, but when enough adults are worried, well, who knows. Oh also, maybe we grown-ups should listen to the little ones more sometimes and not always think they make things up. Appreciate you, thanks. It took a day or two to decide how I wanted to start the hub. Thats usually the hardest part. Skoal Tina! The Eel must swim!

Very scary story Alastar! I normally don´t believe in any story like this but I find it interesting how the stories start off and sort of get a life of their own as time goes. And the damage to the car is convincing:))

I have a clear memory from when I was a child when everyone in the small community where I lived talked about the "Black Lady". Nobody knew if she was for real or if she was a ghost or maybe a witch, but several people testified that they had seen she had also chased after some. I believed it then and was very scared.

Either way, I like the way you wrote this, both interesting and fascinating!

PS- Spirit Whisperer. Could the awesome 1956 film "Forbidden Planet" be used as an analogy for what your talking about? If you haven't seen it: a Dr. Moribus? unconsciously creates a monster through his id to destroy a ship of military Earth men who have landed on the planet he and his daughter have been on all by themselves studying an advanced alien civilization. The inhabitants have vanished but left the technology and structures. He's sub-consciously afraid his daughter will fall in love with one of the men and leave him. The movie was way ahead of it's time and is considered one of the best from the 1950s slew of sci-fi films.

Well my friend, one could look at it that way. The case has never been solved, as a real Lizard Man, hoax, unconscious mental projection etc etc. So the mystery remains. Thank you very kindly Spirit for your interest and great thought provoking comment.

The easiest thing to do is simply dismiss this kind of occurrence as just vandals or people looking for attention or any number of reasons to take our minds away from the idea that they could be the real deal. You know my take on all of this. The power behind our lives is outside of our conscious awareness in the dark canyons of the subconscious. If our unconscious can project monsters on to people then why not create them as well?

Thank you for another interesting read.

That's a heap o scary. Not long ago, fairly near here a respectable family woke up to find one of their cars destroyed in like manner of the Lizard man ones, and there aren't any swamps around here. The police found strange tracks all around the vehicle that didn't led off to any where. Like the thing just popped into the driveway, saw the car, attacked it and popped back out. Doesn't science say there are different dimensions so maybe the answers there. Its an enigma wrapped up in a mystery or whatever Churchill kinda said. Yeah, better not go in the Whooly Swamp. There's such an appeal to the thought that strange, undiscovered creatures we know nothing about are walking the Earth, hidden just out of sight. That's what makes the idea so much fun.

The “fight or flight” response does not apply to me. It’s more the “freeze” response for me when it comes being scared out of my wit.

Looking at the video, it occurred to me that maybe it attacked the car because the cats ran up underneath it trying to hide.

This is one creepy story. I've heard of some very scary stories of strange encounters and some people just explain it away, but who's to say that there aren't any odd creatures in remote areas that have survived and remained in hiding through the ages.

Thanks for another good scare. Now, I’ll be afraid to drive at night. You know, Florida is not that far from Georgia and we do have swamps here.

Science continually discovers "new" species that had remained hidden for decades, centuries even. There surely are larger ones way back in secluded areas. As humans encroach and destroy their habitat, they come in contact with us more and more. This lizard man may be trying to survive and is forced to come closer to civilization to forage and even seek a mate. What is it? I don't have a clue. Am I a doubter? No. There are some amazing creations on our planet.

This is a well written and interesting piece of work. The fact that Christopher passed a polygraph is great to know. You did well to include that.

Hi pras, yes mystery galore here. Absolutely. I believe they exist too and yes, in possibly unknown recesses. Many witnesses to this case with evidence. The quest goes on. Thank you my friend, so glad you like. Your new Hub on the giant and complex ant colony only recently uncovered, its truly awesome.

Agree with you Lady Tenaz, and you've stated the situation perfectly. If a person ever has a bona fide experience with a strange animal or entity type its certainly something that changes their outlook or paradigm. Folks who say well, why has one never been caught etc are thinking in-side the box. We may not know all there is to know yet about everything. These events are not hocus-pocus but must have scientific answers behind them that at least the general public may not yet be aware of. Yes, very clever hoaxes occur, but this doesn't explain all of them. Very glad you were entertained, educated and enjoyed here my Pisces friend.~:)

Haaa! Mr. Epi after your bee-hive poem no doubt it would..LOL. Thanks for the recommendation and it'd be nice to hook up with whoever that is. Your featured writers are always winners. And Epi I wish the poets touch you have would rub off a little here. Appreciate you good friend.

Wow....This was so interesting. I had never knew about this before, but I love something about mystery. I do believe that this man was existed. There are many mysterious creatures out there and this world hide them in the secret place. They may appear without any noticed by us. Like this case, there are several witnesses, right. It's enough for us to believe. But research still needed to know more about the existence from this creature. You have done a great job, my friend. Thank for share all pictures and video as well. Vote up up!

I truly believe there are creatures out there beyond our understanding that we just haven't discovered yet. Obviously they are quick and evasive being able to go under the radar from us most of the time, but just enough to make the legends of "eye witness" accounts believable. I believe there are Sasquatch out there, and if they are just another form of living creature we don't know a lot about, perhaps the Lizard Man is yet another mysterious being that we have yet to document. Very entertaining, educating and enjoyable hub! Voted up!

...holy shite what a story - glad it was you telling this story and not me - my lizard man would have been pornographic - lol lol - but all kidding aside I just recommnended you to another hubber which I do all of the time anyway because if there's one writer here that I wish I could write like - it's you!!

You are the quintessential storyteller and historian - and you always leave me satisfied with each new subject as told by you in one of your landmark hubs.

So true Jackie. We don't know everything about these strange things. Oh yes, the coin has flipped on the UFOs, now your a kook if you laugh. Sure would like to see your pics. The ones like Lizard Man are not to be fooled with, they aren't gentle like the BF seem to be. Many people have disappeared in those swamps over time. The force to do the damage on all those vehicles is according to the State authorities and even Monster Quest TV to be beyond the power of any know clawed animal like a bear. Fun hub it is and good you like it. Your a brave( remember the panther) and wise woman, thank you Jackie.~:)

Well Alaster they keep finding lost tribes so I guess it is possible there are species out there that we still know nothing of. I use to laugh at UFO's and definitely believe in them now, as a matter of fact I think I might have caught a picture of one myself. I take sky shots almost daily and two different ones had a UFO it looked like in it. One picture was clearer than the other and there was a smaller one behind it, or it looked like it. So who knows. I think I might fear Lizard Man more than Big Foot. Surely it is something to have so many vehicles tampered with. Fun hub, good to have some fun ones. Awesome.

drbj thank you and that's a good deduction. 'It' definitely has thing for them. Doubtful about the Lizard Man obtaining any car insurance though. Know some folks who have a farm maybe 40 miles from that area and the men-folk( a tough but friendly bunch) have said there are parts of those swamps no person in their right minds would go anywhere near. The damage to the vehicles, if nothing else, is a bit intriguing though. There was even a car clawing/mauling not far from here recently. Who knows for sure?

After reading this fascinating story, Alastar, I believe that Lizard Man is not really looking to make trouble. He just wants to own his very own ride.
